The Lakehead University has grown out of the Lakehead College of Arts, Science, and Technology and the Lakehead Technical Institute during the last several decades. As a result of the province's educational need, Lakehead Technical University was established. Order-in-Council of the Province of Ontario was issued in 1946 to establish it.

Through nine colleges (Education, Business Administration, Engineering; Health and Behavioural Sciences; Medicine and Graduate Studies), the university provides 57 undergraduate and 30 graduate and doctorate degrees in a wide range of disciplines.

More than a third of those applying to the university's undergraduate programme choose to study in the Social Science & Humanities department. Medicine and Natural Resources Management are the university's smallest departments, with fewer than 2% of students enrolled.
