NYU is a New York City-based private research university. Founded by a group of New Yorkers headed by then-Secretary of the Treasury Albert Gallatin, NYU was established in 1831.
Secular education was the objective of the first nondenominational all-male school that opened near City Hall in 1832. In 1833, the institution relocated to Greenwich Village and built a new campus around Washington Square Park, which it has maintained ever since. In addition, it has established an engineering school at Brooklyn's MetroTech Center and graduate schools in Manhattan.
In 2019, NYU enrolled 51,848 students, including 26,733 undergraduates and 25,115 graduate students, making it the most significant private institution in the United States. Additionally, NYU gets the most applications of any private university in the United States, and admittance is very competitive.
12.8% of the more than 100,000 applicants were accepted for the incoming first-year class of 2025. In 2021, NYU became the first private institution in the United States to get more than 100,000 applicants. Class of 2025 admission to the College of Arts and Science was 7%, and the Stern School of Business was 5.6%.
