The University of California—Berkeley was founded in 1868 and is one of the most significant state colleges in the United States. University of San Francisco's 1,232-acre campus is situated in the San Francisco Bay Area. The academic year at the institution is divided into two semesters. There are undergraduate programmes at all nine of the research institutions. The Mathematical Sciences Scientific Institute and the Space Sciences Laboratory are two of the most prominent research institutions in the country. The university's scientists have discovered 16 chemical elements of the periodic table. At the same time, Berkeley is among only 14 institutions to join the Association of American Universities.
