Institution of South Australia is a South Australian public research university. There are around 32,000 students enrolled at this institution, a founding member of the Australian Technology Network.

When the South Australian Institute of Technology (SAIT) and the South Australian College of Advanced Education (SACAE) merged in 1991, they became the South Australian University of Technology (SAUT) (SACAE, established 1856). The Hon. Mike Rann MP, Minister of Employment and Further Education, submitted legislation to create and name the new University of South Australia.

For its initial purpose, the University was entrusted with the preservation of knowledge via the dissemination of educational programs that would enrich the cultural life of the larger community.

Founded in 1856 by Charles Hill and H. P. Gill, the South Australian School of Design, the South Australian School of Arts has a long and rich history. As a result, it can claim to be one of Australia's oldest art schools and the most senior public art school. The Ann & Gordon Samstag Scholarship is awarded by the school, which is currently part of UniSA's Division of Education, Arts and Social Sciences.
