In Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, the Federation Institution Australia, also known as Fed Uni, is a public, dual-sector university. It also has campuses in Ararat (in the state of Victoria), Horsham (in the form of Victoria), Stawell (in the state of Western Australia), Churchill (in the state of North Queensland), and Brisbane (in the state of Queensland).
Founded in 1870 during the Victorian gold rush, Federation University is Australia's fourth-oldest higher education institution. In 2013, the University of Ballarat and the Gippsland campus of Monash University merged, and the university's name was changed to Federation University as of 2014.
Legislation to create Federation University Australia was approved in Victoria's Parliament on September 6, 2013. The process of rebranding started in earnest in 2014. The then Vice-Chancellor explained the name change as an effort to expand the university's reach nationally and worldwide and as a way to be fair to the university's other campuses. Within the university, this name was selected over others such as "The State University of Victoria," "Eureka University," "Robert Menzies University," and "Vida Goldstein University.".
On the university's School of Mines (SMB) campus, at the southern end of Lydiard Street, stood the Ballarat Gaol, a high-security jail that functioned from 1862 until 1965. The street's Victorian architecture is well-known for its pristine condition. Though much of the prison was torn down in the 1960s, its historic walls, gates, and guard towers are still standing, as are the governor and warden's apartments.
Old Ballarat Gaol's governor's mansion is now home to the Collaborative Research Centre for Australian History (CRCAH). At the CRCAH headquarters, Bella Guerin, the first woman to graduate from an Australian institution in 1883, now serves as the director's office. The historic School of Mines buildings is still part of the campus.
