James Patterson, a member of the local school board and a hard rock miner, founded College of the Rockies in 1971. He was acutely aware of the dire need for apprenticeship training in the British Columbian province's East Kootenay area. The government mandated that Cranbrook is the site of the primary campus.

There are two campuses of the College of the Rockies in Cranbrook. Trades and student services programs and most administrative departments may be found on the main campus.

The Timber Framing Program and Continuing Education Health and Safety courses are located on the Gold Creek site. These five regional locations make up the College of the Rockies. There are various options for each of them, and they all serve and give back to the community they live in.

The five regional campuses are Fernie, Creston, Kimberly, Invermere, and Golden. The campus at Golden is surrounded by stunning scenery. The Sunshine Village, Panorama Mountain Village, Lake Louise, and Revelstoke Mountain Resort are all short drives from Golden.
