As a result of the Prince Edward Island Comprehensive Development Plan's education reforms, the province's two religiously affiliated post-secondary institutions, St. Dunstan's University and Prince of Wales College were closed in 1969, and the non-denominational University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) and Holland College were established in their place.
