In Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, the Federation Institution Australia (Fed Uni) is a public, dual-sector university. Ararat, Churchill, Stawell, Berwick and Brisbane are all campuses of the university, as well as online TAFE courses and Horsham's Higher Education Nursing program (HEN).

Australia's fourth-oldest higher education institution, Federation University, started in the Victorian gold rush of 1870 as a precursor institution. In 2013, the University of Ballarat and the Gippsland campus of Monash University merged, and the university's name was changed to Federation University as of 2014.

Legislation to create Federation University Australia was approved in Victoria's Parliament on September 6, 2013. In 2014, the name change was made official. The then Vice-Chancellor explained the name change as an effort to expand the university's reach nationally and worldwide and as a way to be fair to the university's other campuses. Within the university, this name was favoured over others, including "State University of Victoria," "Eureka University," "Robert Menzies University," and even "Vida Goldstein University."
