The Institution of New England, formerly known as the New England University College when it was founded in 1938, became an autonomous university in 1954. A unique feature of this institution is that it is an open one. First Australian university to be established outside the state capital, it today has around 22,300 students studying in its Armidale, New South Wales, campus, which is in northern central New South Wales's city of Armidale.
Armidale is home to several university campuses. With its northern campus barely 5 kilometres from the city centre, the institution has an area of 74 hectares. Several structures on campus, including the old farmhouse known as 'Booloominbah,' are still used.
Aside from that, the campus is well-served with world-class athletic facilities and amenities, including retail stores and restaurants, health care facilities and child care centres and a post office and banking services. The Heritage Centre and other structures linked with the previous Armidale College of Advanced Education are also located on the university's Newling campus.
University students may study online or on-campus in more than 200 programs. Students at the institution may pursue a degree from nine different schools within three faculties. In addition, the university awards scholarships and prizes each year and gives more than $18 million in research support to faculty and students.
