Public research university in Western Australia, the University of Western Australia (UWA), was founded in 1902 and is located in Perth. Located in Perth, the state capital, the university has a satellite campus in Albany and several other locations. The Western Australian Parliament created UWA in 1911, and the university started educating students two years later.
When Western Australia's only university, Murdoch Institution, opened in 1973, the University of Western Australia (UWA) was the sixth oldest university in Australia. The term "sandstone university" refers to the oldest institution in each state, and the University of Western Australia (UWA) falls into this category.
Group of Eight and Matariki Network of Universities are only two of the more official affiliations that the institution has. Depending on the ranking methodology, UWA has either been in the bottom half or slightly outside the top 100 institutions globally in recent years. Students who have graduated from the University of Western Australia include five of the most recent Western Australian premiers and one former Australian Prime Minister. Other notable alumni include H. C. Coombs, a former Reserve Bank of Australia Governor.
Akshay Venkatesh, an alumni mathematician, was awarded the Fields Medal in 2018. As of 2021, 106 Rhodes Scholars have been produced by the institution. In addition, University of Western Australia faculty members Barry Marshall and Robin Warren have earned Nobel Prizes for their work.
