The Institution of East Anglia, a premier public research university located in Norwich's western suburbs, was established in 1963. The institution was housed in a makeshift University Village on the other side of the current campus's perimeter for a brief period.

Initially, it had roughly 1200 students enrolled in English and biological studies degree programs. When the institution was founded, Earlham Hall (now the Law School building) served as the university's administrative center. Since its inception, the university has been ranked among the finest in the country for higher education.

The university's campus covers 320 acres and is home to academic buildings, a medical center, a library open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and sporting grounds and multipurpose halls. In addition, the Lower Common Room (LCR) is the university's primary venue for live performances and concerts.

The university's academic framework is broken down into four faculties with 26 schools of study. Among the many degrees available at these institutions are the sciences, medicine, the humanities, and social sciences.
