Sheffield Medical School, Firth College, and the Sheffield Technical School all have ties to the Institution of Sheffield, which was founded in 1897 as an open research university. The institution focuses mainly on the fields of technology and science.
There are six red bricks universities in the industrial sector of England, and the institution is one of them. The first batch of 114 pupils enrolled in the sessions, and later on, the number of students enrolled rose to 1,000.
