In 1451, a papal edict created the University of Glasgow. There are just four universities in Scotland older than this one, and the fourth oldest institution in the United States. There are several locations where the university may be found. The Gilmorehill campus, located near Hillhead, is the major campus.

Gartnavel Royal Hospital on Great Western Road provides medical services for the university's Veterinary School and Dental School, situated on the Garscube Estate campus in Bearsden.
With the Crichton campus in Dumfries and a teaching centre at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Dumfries, the Open University collaborates with three other institutions to run these facilities.
