The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are Autonomous and Public institutes of technical and research education. At present, there are 23 IITs across the country under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. IITs are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. Each IIT is autonomous and is associated and connected to the other IITs through a common IIT Council. IIT Council is the overall coordinator of their administration of all IITs. As of 2021, the total number of seats for all undergraduate programs in all IITs combined is 16,234.

In April 2015, IIT Bombay launched the first U.S.- India joint EMBA program in partnership with Washington University, St. Louis.
Admissions to masters programs in engineering are granted based on scores of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).
Admissions to masters programs in science are granted based on scores of the Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (JAM).

(IV) Doctoral Programs
The IITs offer the Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD). The duration of the program is not specified and depends on the specific discipline and topic allotted. PhD candidates have to submit a dissertation followed by an interview / oral defense for the thesis.
Research Assistantships (RA) and Teaching Assistantships (TA) are also provided.
IITs allow admission in PhD programs without the mandatory GATE score
