    Many engineering graduates are clueless after completing their engineering as to how and where to apply for Government Jobs. Even in Government sectors, the demand for engineers is very high compared to other professionals in the same sector. Here is an attempt to summarize some of the very popular jobs and roles in Government sectors for engineers in India.


     

    Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO)

    DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organization) executes Research & Development projects for the Ministry of Defense, Govt of India. Spread across fifty DRDO laboratories, the organization empowers high technologies under several disciplines such as electronics, astronautics, armaments, missiles, naval systems, combat vehicles, special materials, agriculture life sciences, training, information systems, advanced computing, engineering systems, simulation and instrumentation. The organization recruits competent engineers for the posts of Group ‘A’ (Class I Gazetted) Officers known as Defence Research & Development Service (DRDS).


     

    Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO)

    ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) recruits engineers through a special test named ISRO ICRB (Centralized Recruitment Board). The best engineers with critical thinking, statistics and data analysis skills must apply for this test. Other jobs require the skills to design, develop and launch vehicles and satellites to make a career in ISRO. 


     

    Indian Armed Forces

    The three wings of Indian Defence Services namely, the Army, the Air Force and the Navy, hire engineers for various technical positions. After passing the Combined Defense Services Examination (CDSE), the unmarried graduates undergo training in branches of the Indian armed forces to become officers. 


     

    Indian Engineering Services (IES)

    IES (Indian Engineering Services) is one of the most preferred careers for engineering graduates. All Group A services engineers under IES are appointed by the President of India. To get this job, the candidates have to take the Engineering Services Examination(ESE), conducted by the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC). The major recruiters of IES Engineers amongst government organizations are the Central Public Works Department (CPWD), Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Directorate General of Supply and Disposals, Indian Navy, Indian Railways etc. 


     

    Union /  State Public Service Commission

    Engineers can appear for Union / State Public Services Examination to get appointed for various administrative jobs in the states and Union Territories of India e.g. RTO, MRO, Tehsildar, banking and industries like ONGC, GAIL, SAIL, IOCL, NTPC, BEL, CIL, BHEL GAIL, BPCL etc. Many of these jobs require the candidate to clear GATE. 


     

    National Banks

    Since the banks are now driven by technology and perhaps the most widely used industry by even the common man, banking jobs require engineers with sharp analytical, programming, market prediction and skills from the Information Technology / Computer Science / Electrical and Electronics streams, Artificial Intelligence, Business Intelligence, Data Science, Machine Learning and even Ethical Hacking skills. Many banks recruit engineers through an entrance test.     Lecturers or the University Professors in Government Institutions

    University Grants Commission conducts National Eligibility Test (UGC - NET) for post graduates (M-Tech professionals) to recruit lecturers and associate professors in government colleges and universities.
